Teaching at Western

Since 2009, Andrew Bartley has been honoured to teach leadership courses through Continuing Studies at Western University. Since 2020, these courses have been entirely online.

Andrew’s teaching begins with people: the experience they bring, the questions they ask, and what they can learn from one another. Research and practical tools broaden the conversation. Reflection and shared inquiry help participants consider what they might choose to do differently.

Western Continuing Studies

Western Continuing Studies offers certificate pathways for people strengthening their capacity to lead, work with others, and navigate change.

Andrew teaches the following four courses, each of which can build towards a Professional Certificate in Leadership and, through that certificate, an Advanced Professional Certificate in Leadership. All combine live online learning with independent preparation, reflection, and practical application. Participants may register for individual courses.

Coaching and Mentoring - LEAD6251

When should a leader ask questions, offer advice, or provide direction?

Coaching, mentoring, and supervisory coaching serve different purposes, but each begins with attention to the person. Participants explore the roles of listening, questioning, reflecting back, and knowing when advice is helpful. Through real-play coaching conversations and reflection on their own habits, they practise responding to people rather than rushing to solve problems, adapting their approach to the support and direction others need.

Leading Across Generations - LEAD6260

How can leaders work effectively across generations without reducing people to labels?

Today’s Canadian workplaces bring together Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials, and Generation Z, with Generation Alpha on the horizon. Drawing on Canadian demographics, developmental psychology, and first-hand interviews across age groups, participants investigate how life stage, career phase, and historical context shape workplace experience. They explore how values shape relationships and develop practical approaches to communication, feedback, conflict, and collaboration that respect individuals while helping teams recognize and value what each person brings.

Optimizing Change - LEAD6252

What shapes how we respond to change? What becomes possible when we notice those patterns?

Change touches us individually and in our relationships, teams, and organizations. Participants examine the habits, assumptions, and competing commitments that can constrain their freedom to act. Through a personal habit-change experiment, reflection with colleagues in small learning pods, and practical exercises, they explore how to navigate change with greater awareness and intention.

Strategic Leadership - LEAD6257

How can we bring leadership, strategy, vision, and culture into better alignment?

Bringing together the threads of Western’s leadership program, this capstone course explores the paradoxes of strategy and how leaders move from vision to choices, action, and follow-through. Through case studies, assessment, reflection, and action planning, participants examine organizational alignment, clarify their own leadership character and strengths, and consider how to cultivate leadership in others.
